Why Does Viscose Look Different from Different Angles?
This is one of the questions we hear most often from clients shortly after their rug is installed.
One of the most striking characteristics of a viscose rug is also the one that can be the most surprising at first: its appearance changes depending on the light and the direction from which it is viewed.
A rug may look lighter from one side of the room, deeper or darker from another, and may even seem to shift colour as you walk around it.
This is not a manufacturing defect. It is a natural property of viscose.
01The Beauty of Light and Direction
Viscose fibres have a naturally smooth, lustrous surface. Unlike more matte fibres, viscose reflects light differently depending on the direction of the pile and the angle of the light.
When light strikes the surface directly, the rug appears brighter and more luminous. From another angle, the fibres scatter light differently, creating a deeper, richer appearance.
This is why the same rug can look:
- Light from one direction
- Darker from the opposite direction
- More reflective in natural daylight
- Softer or deeper under warm interior lighting
As you move around the room, the rug seems to transform with you.
02Directional Shading: A Characteristic of Viscose
The direction in which the pile lies plays an important role. When the fibres are brushed or viewed in one direction, they reflect light differently than when viewed from the opposite direction.
This is what the trade calls directional shading, and it is sometimes also known as pile reversal or watermarking: the pile leans slightly one way, and light bounces off the sides and tips of the yarn differently depending on where you are standing.
Depending on where you stand, one section of the rug may appear lighter while another appears darker, even though the actual colour of the yarn remains the same.
This variation is what gives viscose rugs their distinctive sense of depth, movement and luxury.
03Why Lighting Makes Such a Difference
Lighting can dramatically influence how a viscose rug is perceived. Natural daylight, warm lighting, cool lighting and directional spotlights all create different visual effects on the surface.
A rug that appears soft and subtle during the day may look richer and more reflective in the evening.
For this reason, a viscose rug should never be judged from a single photograph, angle or lighting condition. Its appearance is shaped by the interaction between fibre, pile direction, light and perspective.
04Not a Colour Difference — and Not a Defect
When specifying or purchasing a viscose rug, it helps to understand that variations in appearance caused by lighting and viewing direction are entirely normal.
The yarn colour has not changed. There is no inconsistency in the dyeing. There is no defect in the rug.
What you are seeing is simply the natural optical behaviour of a lustrous fibre, the same behaviour flooring professionals recognise across lustrous carpets and rugs of any fibre content, not only viscose.
05A Living Surface
This changing appearance is one of the reasons viscose is so often chosen for luxury rugs. It gives the surface a sense of movement, depth and elegance that more matte materials cannot offer.
At different moments of the day, and from different viewpoints, the rug reveals a slightly different expression. It is not a static surface. It is an interaction between material and light.
At The Woven Arts, we believe that understanding the natural characteristics of a material is essential to designing with it well. Every fibre has its own personality, performance and visual language.
With viscose, the changing play of light is not something to correct. It is something to appreciate, the material doing what it does best, bringing light, depth and movement into a space.

Rug Scale Matters: The Foundation of Every Great Interior
O ne of the most common mistakes I see in living spaces? An undersized rug that appears to float beneath the furniture.
When a rug is too small for the furniture it's meant to anchor, it disrupts the entire composition of a room. Even the most premium interiors can feel visually compressed, disconnected, and incomplete.
Through our work with designers and architects, we've learned that rug scale is one of the most intricate aspects of interior design. Balancing proportions, layout, and intent requires careful, deliberate thought.
A well-scaled rug anchors the furniture, defines the layout, and creates a sense of cohesion. When done right, it visually expands the room, bringing balance and flow. When done wrong, it fragments the entire space.
At The Woven Arts, we treat every rug as a foundational design element, one that sets the tone for the entire interior.
Get the scale right, and everything else falls into place.
We collaborate closely with designers and architects to create bespoke rugs tailored to your exact space and vision. If you're working on a project and want to explore what's possible, reach out — we'd love to be part of it. Visit us at www.thewovenarts.com
