Viscose Rugs: The Complete Guide
Viscose rugs are having a moment. The way they catch the light, the crushed-velvet finish, the sheer range of colours and price points, it's easy to see the appeal.
But viscose isn't a fibre to buy on looks alone. It comes with real trade-offs, and knowing them before you commit makes for a much better decision. Here's what we walk our own clients through.
What Is Viscose?
Viscose, sometimes called rayon, is a semi-synthetic fibre. It begins as natural wood pulp, which is chemically processed and spun into fine, silk-like filaments.
Rugs can be woven from 100% viscose or blended with other fibres, and can be handmade or machine-made. What they all share is the same quiet luxury: the way they catch the light.
The Pros
- A silk-like sheen. A soft, crushed-velvet finish that reflects light beautifully.
- Real luxury, real value. That shimmer, for a fraction of what genuine silk costs.
- Endless choice. An enormous range of colours, patterns and price points.
- Genuinely versatile. At home in living rooms, bedrooms and low-traffic spaces.
The Cons
- It sheds. More than most other fibres, especially when it's new.
- Water is a real risk. It can lose up to half its strength when wet.
- Not built for wear. A tough match for pets, young children or heavy foot traffic.
- It can yellow. Ageing shows more visibly without the right care.
Cleaning & Care
- Skip water-based cleaners. Blot spills, never soak them.
- Keep it in a low-traffic corner of the home.
- Dry it face-down to help prevent yellowing over time.
- Avoid high-heat equipment. Dry cleaning is safest, though it won't lift every stain.
Is Viscose Right for You?
Viscose was never built for a lifetime of heavy use, and that's fine. Not every rug needs to be.
If the shimmer and the colour are right for your space, it's a genuinely beautiful choice. For busier households, wool, Tencel, or a wool-viscose blend give you similar softness with far more resilience.

Rug Scale Matters: The Foundation of Every Great Interior
O ne of the most common mistakes I see in living spaces? An undersized rug that appears to float beneath the furniture.
When a rug is too small for the furniture it's meant to anchor, it disrupts the entire composition of a room. Even the most premium interiors can feel visually compressed, disconnected, and incomplete.
Through our work with designers and architects, we've learned that rug scale is one of the most intricate aspects of interior design. Balancing proportions, layout, and intent requires careful, deliberate thought.
A well-scaled rug anchors the furniture, defines the layout, and creates a sense of cohesion. When done right, it visually expands the room, bringing balance and flow. When done wrong, it fragments the entire space.
At The Woven Arts, we treat every rug as a foundational design element, one that sets the tone for the entire interior.
Get the scale right, and everything else falls into place.
We collaborate closely with designers and architects to create bespoke rugs tailored to your exact space and vision. If you're working on a project and want to explore what's possible, reach out — we'd love to be part of it. Visit us at www.thewovenarts.com
